It all started in the 70’s back in the days, a genre like no other. A new
wave, welcomed largely by the youths and teenagers even the aged couldn’t resist.
Came in subtly but It was amazing how it rocked all, swept the youths off their
feet with explicit content.
Youths nodding their heads to
sharp beats and demonstrating with their hands flowing with the lyrics microphone
in hand .all these were pathognomonic. Youths going round in streets, face caps
turned backwards, big shirts and jeans and bling chains dangling from the neck
trying to live the American dream.
A new monster birthed, the face
of violence revealed; drugs, sexual immorality, murders preached freely on the
streets, slums and TV screens exposing the simple to another way; a carefree
life.
The result; the society simply
adapted, our streets became war zones, the number of juvenile offenders
skyrocketed, penitentiaries overflowed and murders, rape , drug use a and
assault became the other of the day.
In a bid to lead the life preached
by these lyrics our youths indulged. ‘I love good music’ some argued but good
beats and violent lyrics more often makes
violent proclivities and the society today is a function of these things.
Although a few wise ones survived
the onslaught but this is insignificant compared to the number of lives wasted,
numerous abortions due to teenage pregnancies and talented youngsters wasting
in penitentiaries. There is no denying of the fact that some of these peddlers
are gifted but what is gift if not properly channelled? It could spell doom for
the one who wields it.
Rap as a style of music is not
bad but the content matters a lot. Rap music should be rebranded. that, some gospel
artist are currently doing and it may just be the first step in curbing the menace,
then advocacy like i’m currently doing. lets save our youths.
So before you go to the studio to
record that music, before you take that music off the shelve, before you air it on
national TV and before you open up your heart and listen to any insane lyrics,
ask yourself this question-is it fair on the society?
